El Filibusterismo: The Death of Maria Clara De Los Santos

A drawing of Maria Clara by Vicente Manansala. National Museum of Fine Arts. As a Jose Rizal fan, it might sound blasphemous but I don't enjoy reading El Filibusterismo as compared to Noli Me Tangere . I find Rizal's writing a little hurried and the narrative complex in this book. As a sequel to Noli Me Tangere , it does tie up the loose ends that were left unanswered at the end of the book. I always get emotional whenever I read El Fili. Maybe it was all because of the "revolutionary" talk that happens throughout the story. The scenes in El Fili are graver and forthright. There seems to be a sense of darkness that surrounds every page. The Deal There is this particular chapter in El Fili where Simoun , the intrigue-laden protagonist, visits the infirmed Capitan Tiago . The old man is being taken care of by Basilio, the young orphan sacristan in Noli Me Tangere who is now a medical student. Captain Santiago de los Santos is the father of Maria Clara, the...

A Visual Tour of Philippine Lapidas and Tombstones

An artistic gem in the Spanish section of the Carreta Cemetery in Cebu. When I was still living in Metro Manila, it was a yearly tradition for us to go to Pampanga and pay our respect to our paternal ancestors. The last time I spent an All Saints' Day or All Souls' Day in Pampanga was more than a decade ago. There are major three events in a Filipino Christian's year: Lent, Christmas, and Undas (All Saints' Day) Undas is the Filipinized term for the Spanish word, Honras. And Filipinos make it a point to meet with relatives during this holiday. I remember when I was younger, before the advent of the internet and cellphones, one of the pastimes that chidren do in cemeteries during Undas was to gather the candle drippings and make the biggest ball of wax. You'll see youngsters going to one tomb to another gently removing the wax drippings from lighted candles. It wasn't my thing because I didn't like being burnt and I was scared of being lost ...

21 Writers and Poets Who Died Tragically

The tortured genius. The starving artist. The antisocial behavior. The free spirit. The wandering soul. The lost generation. When we hear or read these descriptions, who comes to mind? Our answers will all be the same --- the writer, the poet, the author. Literary artists who live by the power of their words; the might of their pen. But I'm not here to talk about the quirks of their behavior or the majesty of their talent rather the tragedy that befell these masters of the written word that silenced their emotions and souls.

12 Classic Pinoy Hugot and Pick-up lines that are so corny

Ah, love. You win some, you lose some. It's a neverending quest to find that person to spend your lifetime with. What is Hugot? It's a Filipino word that means pull out or drawn out. But recently, Hugot became a catchphrase for something that is deeply emotional especially love. It can be triggered by a song, a word, an action or a movie. Hugot lines have been in vogue even decades ago. It's just that people didn't know how to collectively say it.

18 'Beki' Words to Add to Your Vocabulary

The Philippines is truly a diverse country. Aside from having thousands of islands, fifty different ways to cook adobo, we also have hundreds of languages and dialects. Filipinos are also innovative. One of the popular lingo or slang that came about during the 20th Century is known as Swardspeak or Beki.
