What happens when two Aquinos and a Marcos are in the same place?
Of all the days to really notice the 500-peso bill that crossed my hand — today of all days.
August 1, 2009, was when former Philippine President Corazon Cojuangco Aquino passed away. She joined her husband, Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino, Jr., on the obverse side of the 500-peso bill under the New Generation Currency series in 2010. Senator Aquino’s portrait had first appeared on the 500-peso bill back on August 21, 1987.
Fast forward to 2022: when Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. won the presidency, all banknotes printed after his inauguration carry his signature.
And that is where this single 500-peso bill captures a rare historical overlap—something we will likely never see again. President Corazon C. Aquino, Senator Benigno S. Aquino, Jr., and President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. are names that were never supposed to exist together on a single banknote.
With the rollout of the new Philippine Polymer Banknote Series, these historical figures are giving way to native flora and fauna.
